Local know-how
What we see in Highlands Ranch homes
Highlands Ranch is a master-planned community, and most of its homes were built from the 1980s onward, many backing onto open space, trails and greenbelts. Homes along the open space see more mice in fall and more wasps in summer than homes in the middle of a block.
Paper wasps build under eaves, deck railings and the lids of grills here, and yellowjackets nest in the ground near patios and in landscape rock. Nests start small in spring and are easiest to deal with early, before late summer when yellowjackets defend them hardest.
Basements with window wells are common, and window wells collect spiders, including western black widows, along with leaves and the odd mouse. Clearing them each fall and fitting covers helps. Miller moths pass through in late spring and can get into homes and garages in large numbers. They are a nuisance, but they do not breed indoors and do not need a treatment.

Yellowjackets in the ground right by the patio. They could not come the day I called but were there first thing the next morning, found the entrance and the nest was dead by evening.

Embarrassing problem, handled kindly. They gave us a clear prep list, explained when we could sleep in the room again and came back twice to check. No bugs since the last visit.

Mice in the garage and the shed every fall. They trapped them, sealed a lot of gaps I never knew were there and told us how to clean up the droppings safely. It took three visits, but it worked.
