The older core around Main Street has homes on compact lots, some with basements and foundations that have had decades to settle and crack. Ants and spiders use those cracks, and so do mice when the weather turns cold. A careful look at the foundation is part of every first visit.
Neighborhoods farther south were planted with heavy beds of wood mulch along the foundation. Mulch keeps soil moist, which ants like, and Colorado State University Extension links odorous house ant problems to heavy mulch against buildings. Pulling the mulch back a few inches from the siding helps.
Trees and open space along the South Platte corridor and the creeks bring more wildlife, including mice and wasps, close to homes. Paper wasps nest under deck boards and in play equipment here, and yellowjackets nest in the ground near patios. If you have had termite swarmers or mud tubes in the past, a yearly inspection is a good habit.
