Local know-how
What we see in Golden homes
Golden sits right against the foothills, and homes near open space and wooded slopes share their yards with more wildlife than homes in the middle of the metro. Deer mice are common around garages, sheds and crawl spaces here, and they can carry hantavirus. If you find droppings, air the space out, wear gloves and wet the droppings with a disinfectant before wiping them up. Do not sweep or vacuum them.
Carpenter ants are most common in wooded areas, and we see them more on lots with mature trees, old stumps and firewood stacked against the house. The ants in the kitchen are usually foragers from an outdoor nest, but if winged carpenter ants appear inside, we look for damp wood in the house.
Older homes near downtown have stone foundations and many small gaps that let in mice, spiders and boxelder bugs. Sealing those gaps before fall makes a real difference.

Mice in the garage and the shed every fall. They trapped them, sealed a lot of gaps I never knew were there and told us how to clean up the droppings safely. It took three visits, but it worked.

Yellowjackets in the ground right by the patio. They could not come the day I called but were there first thing the next morning, found the entrance and the nest was dead by evening.

Embarrassing problem, handled kindly. They gave us a clear prep list, explained when we could sleep in the room again and came back twice to check. No bugs since the last visit.
