What we see in Thornton homes
Thornton has grown steadily north of the city. The older neighborhoods toward the south end have homes built in the 1950s and 1960s, with mature trees, older foundations and detached garages. Much of the rest of Thornton is newer, with tighter homes on lots that were open fields not long ago.
Homes next to open land see mice moving in each fall, and they usually start in the garage. Sealing the garage door, the gaps around pipes and the dryer vent keeps most of them out of the house.
Siberian elms and boxelder trees grow in many older yards and along fence lines here. Where they do, elm seed bugs move into homes in summer, and boxelder bugs gather on sunny walls in late summer and come indoors in August and September. Both are nuisance pests rather than a danger, and sealing gaps before they arrive works better than spraying them once they are in.
