What we see in Aurora homes
Aurora covers a lot of ground, and its pests change as you cross it. On the older west side, homes have mature trees, older foundations and detached garages, and we see ants, spiders and mice most. Farther east, subdivisions are newer and border open land, and mice move into garages and basements as the fields cool down each fall.
Newer homes are tighter than older ones, but builders leave gaps around pipes, dryer vents and the lines to the air conditioner. A mouse needs only a gap about the size of a dime, so those are the first places we seal.
Aurora has many apartment communities, where bed bugs and pharaoh ants can spread between units. Pharaoh ants can split their colonies when sprayed, so baiting is the better plan. Renters dealing with bed bugs should tell the landlord in writing first, since Colorado law sets out what the landlord must do and when.
